Modesto (Spanish for "modest ")[1] is the county seat and largest city in Stanislaus County, California, United States.[2] As of 2010, 201,165 people lived in Modesto.

Modesto is situated in the Central Valley. It is located on the Tuolumne River and near the Stanislaus River.

The nation's largest winery, E & J Gallo Winery, is located in Modesto.[3]

Modesto is the 18th largest city in California, and the 103rd largest city in the United States.

Environment


Modesto has been honored as a Tree City USA many times.[4] However, Modesto was named one of the most polluted cities in the U.S. in 2010.[5]
